Dewanganj municipality mayor expelled from AL

Md Shahanayaz Shahansha, mayor of Jamalpur’s Dewanganj municipality.

Jamalpur's Dewanganj municipality mayor Shahanayaz Shahansha was expelled from the upazila Awami League (AL) on Monday for allegedly slapping a government official at the victory day event on Dewanganj Government High School ground on 16 December.

A press release issued from district AL on Monday afternoon said he has been expelled from the AL on charges of assaulting Md Meher Ullah, secondary education officer of the upazila, and breaching the party’s discipline.

Shahanayaz hurled abuses at a government official at the victory day event, and it went viral on the social media. That is embarrassing for the party, the release added.

District AL president Mohammad Baki Billah told Prothom Alo that a public representative cannot assault a government official. The AL doesn't support such misconduct, which is why the expulsion decision was taken in an emergency meeting on Sunday night.

Locals and witnesses said the upazila administration organised a victory day event at Dewanganj Government High School on 16 December. Secondary education officer Meher Ullah was the presenter of the event.

People from different strata along with the officials from the upazila administration were paying tributes by placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on the ground since the morning.

The presenter was calling people and various organisations by microphone to place the garlands. Since Meher Ullah announced the name of the mayor in the fifth place, the mayor hurled abuses at the official and slapped him openly.

Speaking to Prothom Alo over phone, education officer Meher Ullah said the upazila administration assigned him for moderating the event and gave him a list of names, to be announced serially at the event for paying tributes. And, the mayor was the fifth in the list.

As he called the mayor’s name in the fifth place, the mayor at first hurled abuses at him and then slapped him in front of all others, Meher Ullah said adding, he filed a complaint to upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Kamrunnahar Shefa over the matter.
