2nd solo print exhibition of Sharmin Zaman begins
The second solo print exhibition of artist Sharmin Zaman began at the La Galerie of the Alliance Française de Dhaka on 17 January.
Professor Farzana Islam, vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition titled ‘Expression of Life’ as the chief guest while Mainul Abedin, managing director of Udeco Limited, was a special guest.
The focus of Sharmin Zaman’s first solo painting exhibition was the women of Bangladesh. The lifelong struggle of a woman in our country is to settle herself in an adverse atmosphere within the family or the society. The artist wanted to depict those stories in her canvas. She wanted to deconstruct her feelings as well as her own self as an artist. Her first and most motivating reason to get acquainted with colours and brush was nature as Bangladesh is a land of colours with six seasons, said a press release.
The characters and natures of the life around her get their shapes and forms based on how she felt them in her mind. That’s why she named her second solo exhibition ‘Expression of life’.
The colourless lives of many people in this country, however, are a stark contrast to the innumerable colours of the surrounding nature and culture. Zaman’s paintings also embody that reality.
The exhibition, which is open to all, will run till 28 January. From Monday to Thursday, it will be open from 3:00pm to 9:00pm while on Friday and Saturday the exhibition will be open from 9:00am to 12:00noon and 5:00pm to 8:00pm. It will remain closed on Sunday.
