1162.97km new rail tracks to be constructed: Railway minister

Railways minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujan on Tuesday said around 1162.97km new rail tracks will be constructed after completion of the ongoing projects of the current fiscal year, reports news agency UNB.

He disclosed the information at the Railway Bhaban in the capital.

The minister said 140 locomotives, 700 carriages, 1000 wagons, and 125 luggage vans will be added to the railway.

Under the 8th five-year plan, Bangladesh Railway will construct nine rail bridges and adopt projects for infrastructural development of the railway, he added.

Bangladesh Railway has been implementing various projects to expand railway networks under South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) and Trans Asian Railway Network, he added.
