Meetings-assemblies not offence, constitutional rights

Different human rights organisations in the country have made a call to ensure rights to organise peaceful mattings and assemblies on the occasion of 10 December, Human Rights Day, today.

They said it is not a criminal offence to join meetings and assemblies, it is a constitutional right.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948. The United Nations declared the day Human Rights Day in 1950. The theme of Human Rights Day-2022 is 'Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All'.

On the occasion president Md Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate messages.

Expressing hope, the president in his message said the government and non-government organisations including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will continue their sincere efforts in creating awareness about human rights and scopes for the human rights violated victims to get remedies.

The prime minister in her message said the Awami League government is committed to protecting human rights of the people.

Non-government organisation Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has placed a 13-point demand to the government to ensure human rights in the country.

The organisation made the demand in a press release on Friday.

Their main demands include ensuring an environment for healthy political and democratic practice and rights for peaceful meetings and assemblies.

ASK demanded necessary amendments to the Digital Security Act (DSA), which is conflicting with freedom of expression and free media. The organisation also demanded the constitution of an independent commission to investigate the allegations of extrajudicial killings.

Manobadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF) said incidents of filing fictitious cases, raiding houses, making arrests, obstructing meetings and assemblies and extrajudicial killings are recently happening to control the varied opinions.

MFS called upon the government to refrain from violation of such human rights.
