Man killed in 'gunfight'

A man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight with them in Bokarbhanga area in Chhatak, Sunamganj on early Monday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Md Lakkhandor Ali, 30, of Jiapur village.

Police said he was wanted in 12 robbery cases.

Police arrested Lakkhandor on Sunday night, UNB quoted Md Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Chhatak police station as saying.

Lakkhandor was taken to Bokarbhanga area on early Monday for recovering firearms, he said adding that, but he tried to flee and a gunfight ensued when his associates opened fire.

Later, police reportedly recovered the body of Lakkhandor and sent it to Zila Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

“Five policemen sustained severe injuries in the skirmish,” the OC told UNB.

According to a human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfire or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh in 2018.

In the first eight months of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 264, the rights body said on its website.
