Matiur Rahman, Mahfuz Anam awarded as top taxpayers

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Wednesday awarded editor and publisher of the Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman and editor and publisher of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam as the top taxpayers for paying taxes regularly.

They will be awarded for the fourth time in a row.
This year there are five prominent journalists on the list of best tax payers to be honored. The top taxpayer among them is Mahfuz Anam. Second place is Azadi editor Mohammad Abdul Malek from Chattogram. The third highest taxpayer is Matiur Rahman, the Prothom Alo editor. Shaikh Siraj of Channel-i and Ekushey Television's chief editor Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul are the fourth and fifth, respectively.

The tax card will be handed over to them at an event to be organised in the capital on 14 November. The Prothom Alo and the Daily Star editors have received this award every year ever since its inception in the journalism category.

In addition to individual taxpayers, every year the best taxpayer organisation is given a tax card. This time, four companies are being given tax cards in the print and electronic media category. All three of these companies are affiliated with Transcom Group. The companies are Mediastar Limited, Transcraft Limited and Mediaworld Limited. The highest taxpayer in this category is Mediastar Limited. The three companies received the award last year as well.

The Prothom Alo was published by Mediastar Limited and The Daily Star from MediaWorld. These two are printed daily from Transcraft Limited. East West Media Group Limited is one of four companies to be honoured in the print and electronic media category. From this organisation, three daily newspapers are published under the organisation namely Bangladesh Pratidin, Kaler Kantha and The Daily Sun. In addition, the company has a private satellite television, radio and online news portal.

NBR is giving taxpayer cards to 76 individual taxpayers in different categories based on tax statements submitted by the respective individuals. In addition, 67 organisations are also receiving this honour.
