Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of the 49th Victory Day, reports UNB.

The prime minister paid homage by placing a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi, says the news agency.

She stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of independence.

Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, placed another wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation as the party chief.

The nation is celebrating its 49th Victory Day today marking the most precious day when the country was liberated from the Pakistani occupation forces after the nine-month-long War of Liberation.

Under the leadership of Bangabandhu, and the supreme sacrifice of three million martyrs and the honour of 2,00,000 women, Bangladesh was finally born as an independent country on 16 December 1971.
