A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman in the case filed over the accidental death of Dhaka Residential Model College student Naimul Abrar.

Acting chief metropolitan magistrate Kaisarul Islam granted the bail after a Tk 2000 bond was signed.

Earlier, the High Court granted four weeks of anticipatory bail to Matiur Rahman on 20 January and he was asked to surrender in the lower court after the bail period ended. The HC also said to consider the judicial court if Matiur Rahman seeks bail in the case afterwards as it has been filed under a section for bailable offence.

Lawyer Ehsanul Huq Samaji, Aminul Gani, Prashanta Karmakar, Chaitanya Chandra Haldar and Ashraful Alam represented Prothom Alo in the court.

Ninth grader Naimul Abrar died after being electrocuted behind the stage at an event organised by Kishor Alo, a publication of Prothom Alo, at Dhaka Residential Model College on 1 November.

On 6 November, the victim’s father Mojibur Rahman filed the case with the court in this connection. The court directed Mohammadpur police to investigate the case and submit its report.
