Tariqul Islam’s 1st death anniv Monday

The first death anniversary of BNP leader and former minister Tariqul Islam will be observed on Monday.

Jashore BNP and Tariqul Islam Smriti Sangsad worked out various programmes, including discussion, doa mahfil and Qurankhwani, to mark the day.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with some other party senior leaders is scheduled to go to Jashore on Monday to offer fateha at Tariqul's grave and attend a doa mahfil-cum discussion programme to be arranged by the local unit of the party, said BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu.

Besides, he said, Tariqul Islam Smriti Sangsad will arrange a discussion at the National Press Club on Tuesday on the occasion.

On 4 November last year, Tariqul died at Apollo Hospital in the capital at the age of 73. He was buried at Karbala graveyard in Jashore district town the following day.

He was elected MP for four times from Jashore and discharged as information and environment and forest minister during the BNP-led four-party government.

When BNP formed the government in 1991, Tariqul was first made social welfare minister and then posts and telecommunications minister.

He was also the first elected chairman of Jashore municipality.
