Teenage boy tortured over theft charge

A 17-year-old boy, who was brutally tortured by some influentials on charge of stealing a mobile phone at Dharon Bazar in Chhatak upazila, Sunamganj, is now undergoing treatment at Chhatak Upazila Health Complex, reports UNB.

The incident came to light on Monday night, five days after the incident, which took place at a field at Dharon Bazar in the upazila on Thursday.

Quoting victim’s family, it was learnt that the boy used to work at the tea stall of one Zillu Mia of Pirpur village around 3/4 years ago. A mobile phone was stolen from the stall on Tuesday.

Following the directives of Zillu Mia, his supporters took the boy to a field at Dharan Bazar on Thursday night where they beat him up after gagging and tying his hands and legs.

They also broke the boy’s legs. Failing to bear the torture, the boy fell unconscious.

Later, he was taken to the Upazila Health Complex.

Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Chhatak police station, said no complaint was lodged in this connection and legal action will be taken after getting written complaint.
