Lightning causes 3 deaths in Dhaka

During a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon, three including two siblings were killed in Malibagh area of Dhaka.

However, rescuers and police could not provide details about the cause of their death.

The deceased are identified as Pakhi, 9, Soma, 12 – two sisters, and an elederly man Abdul Haque.

Hatirjheel police station’s officer-in-charge Abdur Rashid confirmed the news to Prothom Alo.

He said, “Lightning struck an electric pole at Sona Mia alley of Chowdhuripara in Malibagh, snapping an electric wire that electrified a nearby iron gate. The two children and the old man died instantly when they touched the gate.”

Local people rushed the victims to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the Community Clinic at Wireless Gate where physicians declared them dead.

The children’s mother works at a garments factory and father is a rickshaw-puller. Neither parent was at home when the accident occurred, local people said.
