Trawler capsize kills at least 17 in Netrokona haor

At least 17 people were killed while two remain missing as a trawler capsized in Razalikanda Haor in Madan upazila of Netrokona on Wednesday afternoon.

All of the deceased were students and teachers of a madrasa in Charsirta union of Mymensingh sadar upazila. They went for a pleasure trip to the haor following the Eid-ul-Azha.

Local people and upazila administration said the students and the teachers of the madrasa were going to Gobindasri from Uchitpur of Madan upazila around 1:00pm. At that time, the trawler capsized due to strong current in Razalikanda area.

Local people tried to rescue the drowned first. Later, the fire service men and police members took part in the rescue operation.

Madan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bulbul Ahmed Talukder told Prothom Alo around 3:00pm that they had recovered 17 bodies till then while two were missing.

The identities of the deceased were yet to be ascertained.

There were 48 passengers in the trawler, Bulbul Ahmed added.
