A total of 144 people secured bail after their petitions were heard by virtual courts on Tuesday, reports UNB.

Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of High Court Division, confirmed the matter.

Court operation was remained suspended since 26 March to curb the coronavirus transmission. Trial proceedings through videoconference begun on Monday.

Earlier, the High Court on Sunday formed three separate benches for hearing urgent cases virtually during the ongoing holidays and directed the subordinate court concerned to hear cases related to emergency bail.

An ordinance was promulgated on Sunday allowing courts to run trial proceedings through videoconference and other digital facilities. President Abdul Hamid promulgated the ordinance.

Later, the law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry issued a gazette notification, saying that it will take immediate effect.

The cabinet on 7 May cleared the draft of an ordinance to pave the way for courts to run trial proceedings through videoconference and other digital means using IT.
