Another Jubo League associate of Barkat-Rubel arrested in Faridpur

The police have arrested Faridpur Jubo League leader Arifur Rahman alias Farhan (40). Faridpur Kotwali police arrested him at 3am Saturday night from his house at the Purbo Kabashpur Launchghat area of the town.

Arifur is the general secretary of the town unit of Jubo League.

Awami League sources said that there had been no student union at the Government Rajendra College for 11 years before 2017. After the 2018 election, Arifur Rahman and his friend Fahad Bin Wajed alias Fain took control of the college’s student politics. They would carry out their political activities from the RCSU building. Even though they were not elected vice presidents or general secretaries, they would wield the power of these posts.

When the Faridpur-3 (sadar) member of parliament and former minister Khandokar Mosharraf Hossain would hold public meetings and rallies in Faridpur town and nearby areas, Arifur and Fahad would bring Chhatra League leaders and activists to attend and chant slogans. Later Arifur became the town Jubo League general secretary and Fahad the district Swechhashebok League general secretary. Arifur was a follower of the MP’s brother Khandokar Mohtesham Hossain Babar and Fahad was a follower of district Jubo League convener and the MP’s APS HM Fuad.

In February 2018 a mugging took place near Sonali Bank in Faridpur. A nurse of Faridpur Medical College Hospital was killed in the incident. Arifur went into hiding after it was proven that his cadres were involved in the incident.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of the Faridpur Kotwali police station, Morshed Alam, said that Arifur has been arrested in the case filed by the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with the Kafrul police station in Dhaka. The district judicial magistrate’s court will send him to jail today, Sunday. From the Faridpur jail, CID will then take them into its own custody.

Two others were arrested on Saturday in this case. They are Faridpur district Awami League president Nazmul Islam Khandokar alias Leby (61) and district Sramik League treasurer Billal (54).

Nazmul Islam and Billal Hossain are both in the district jail, said Faridpur jail super Abdur Rahim this afternoon.

Previously, Awami League town general secretary (expelled) Sajjad Hossain Barkat and his brother Faridpur press club president (expelled) Imtiaz Hasan Rubel were charged by the CID for money laundering involving Tk 20 billion. CID inspector SM Miraj Al Mahmud filed a case in this regard at the Kafrul police station on 26 June. He two brothers were followers of MP and former minister Khandokar Mosharraf Hossain.
