Dhaka's anti-terrorism tribunal judge Md Mujibur Rahman has said that those who kill people for publishing books are enemies of the society and the state.

He made the observation in the verdict delivered in the case filed over murder of Jagriti Prokashoni publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan. Eight accused have been sentenced to death in the case.

“If the murderers of Faisal Arefin Dipon stay alive, the other members of Ansar al-Islam would be encouraged to commit same. As the convicted murderers backed by Ansar al-Islam had participated in killing Faisal Arefin Dipan, they must be awarded same punishment. If all accused are awarded death sentence, a fair justice will be ensured and this will be an exemplary punishment," the judge observed.

The court also said that the death sentence to the convicts would give a mental peace to the victim’s family. On the other hand the punishment would deter others from committing similar crimes in future.

About the cause of murder, the court said Jagriti publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan was murdered as he published books of writer and blogger Avijit Roy who was also murdered allegedly by militants.

Sacked army major Ziaul Haque ordered the killing. Ziaul used to train up and finance the militants. Convicted Akram planned the blueprint of Dipan murder, the judgment said.

The court also observed that convicted killer Mainul Hasan Shamim arranged the weapon while another convict Mojammel Hossain recced the Aziz Super Market where Dipan was killed. Convict Sheikh Abdullah played crucial role in the killing.
