Man killed in Jashore gunfight: Police

A man was killed in what the police called a gunfight with them in Ballabpur of Chougachha upazila in Jashore on Saturday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Jahirul Islam, 40, a resident of Andulia village in the upazila. Police said he was accused in 11 cases.

“Drug traders opened fire on police during a drive near Ballabpur School at night,” said Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge of Chougachha police station.

“Jahirul was caught in crossfire and died on the spot,” he said.

Police later recovered the body of Jahirul, a pistol, and 100 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.

According to the human rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in 2018 while 370 killed in 2019 in such gunfight, crossfire and shootouts with different law enforcement agencies.

At least 45 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first two months 2020, ASK said on its website.
