Criminal killed in Khilgaon gunfight: Police

Police claimed a man accused in 17 cases was killed during an alleged gunfight with them in the city’s Khilgaon area on early Sunday, reports UNB.

The man was identified as Sohel alias Jhono, 30.

Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon police station, said airport police arrested Sohel from the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8:30pm on Saturday night just after he reached Dhaka from Cox’s Bazar by a flight.

Sohel was accused in cases including murder and drugs, the OC said.

Later, he was taken to Khilgaon Police Station the same night.

During preliminary interrogation, he revealed that drugs and firearms had been kept at a spot in Nagdarpar area of Khilgaon, the OC said.

Based on his information, a police team, led by the OC, under the supervision of assistant commissioner of Khilgaon zone Zulfikar Ali went to the spot along with Sohel in the early hours of Sunday.

Sohel’s associates opened fire when the police team reached the spot around 2:45am, the OC claimed.

During the ensuing gunfight, Sohel suffered gunshot wounds. Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor pronounced him dead.

Police also recovered a pistol from the spot.

OC Rahman said Assistant Commissioner Ali and he were injured in the gunfight.
