Police claim 'missing' DU student, brother detained for involvement in militancy

Redwan Farhad

A Dhaka University student and his brother have remained missing after a group of people identifying themselves as policemen picked them up from their Moheshkhali home in Cox’s Bazar.

However, police claimed that they were detained for allegedly being involved in militant activities.

They are Redwan Farhad, a master’s student of DU’s Arabic department and his elder brother Rashed Khan alias Menon from Yunuskhali Pashimpara in Kalarmarchhara, Maheshkali.

In primary investigation, Redwan denied any involvement with the militant organisation saying he had been trapped, according to police.

Rashed was picked up when he was on the way to his home around 3:00pm on Thursday and his brother, Redwan, was picked up from their village home on Friday afternoon, alleged their family.

Mohammad Ismail, elder brother of Redwan and Rashed, told Prothom Alo that at least seven to eight people introducing them as DB (Detective Branch) policemen raided their house on Friday afternoon (24 July) and picked up Redwan.

Rashed was also picked up in the similar fashion one day ago, he added.

He also said that they could not trace the whereabouts about the siblings till Monday night, adding that even Maheshkhali police station could not help them.

Manos Barua, district inspector of detective branch of police (officer-in-charge of DB), claimed that Redwan had founded a militant organisation.

He added that the two were sent to Dhaka for interrogation but did not clarify where they actually are now.
