Police constable ‘rapes college student promising to marry her’

A police constable allegedly raped a college student promising to marry her at Yeakubpur village in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, reports news agency UNB.

The allegation was brought against Ripon Singh of Dhantala in Baliadangi upazila. He is currently posted in Dinajpur.

The incident came to light on Wednesday after the victim's father recently lodged a complaint against Ripon with the superintendent of police in Dinajpur, said Madhusudan Datta, an officer of Police Bureau of Investigation.

According to the complaint, Ripon had an affair with the girl. He promised to marry the girl and developed physical relationship with her.

When the girl asked him to marry her, Ripon asked for Tk 1.5 million as dowry. The policeman refused to marry the girl even after the victim’s father agreed to provide Tk 400,000.

The victim’s father filed a complaint with the Dinajpur SP on 18 June.
