'Rape attempt' sends BGB member to jail

A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was sent to prison on Sunday for allegedly trying to rape a first grader in Cumilla's Burichong upazila.

The accused Abdul Wadud, 42, son of Abdul Mazid, is the resident of the village and a member of 34-BGB in Cox’s Bazar.

According to case statement, Wadud took the minor girl to a room adjoining his house on 11 March. He lured the victim with the promises of giving her ice cream.

When the girl started screaming, he gave her Tk 5 and left the place.

The victim later informed her grandparents about her ordeal. On 14 March, when Wadud went to the local market, villagers asked him about the incident, leading to an altercation.

Locals beat him up and handed him over to police.

Mozammel Haque, officer-in-charge of Burichong police station, said Wadud had been sent to prison through court in a case filed over rape attempt.
