Rohingya youth killed in BGB ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya man was killed in what law enforcers called a gunfight with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Nayapara Beribadh in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila early Sunday.

The deceased was Mohammad Saker, 22, son of Khairul Alam of Ukhiya Baukhali camp.

A team of BGB went to Nayapara around 4:00am after being tipped off about a drug smuggling bid, said commanding officer of Teknaf-2 BGB, lieutenant colonel Mohamamd Foysal Hassan Khan.

After a while, some people were seen entering the area with sacks after crossing the Naf river. When BGB stopped them, the criminals opened fire, triggering a skirmish, he said.

Saker sustained gunshot wounds during the 'gunfight'. Later, he was taken to Teknaf upazila Health Complex where the physicians declared him dead, the BGB officer said.

Two BGB members were injured during the gunfight, he claimed.

A gun, two cartridges and 240,000 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
