Sinha murder: 3 witnesses detained in police case

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three persons from Marisbunia in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar in connection with the murder of retired major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan in Teknaf.

Arrested Nurul Amin, Nizam Uddin and Mohamamd Ayas are witnesses in a case filed by police after the killing of Sinha in what police first called a crossfire.

The RAB members arrested them from the area around 2:00pm, said RAB (legal and media wing) director lieutenant colonel Ashik Billah.

News agency UNB adds: Ashik Billah said it has primarily been confirmed that they were involved in the murder.

RAB produced them before a court with a 10-day remand plea.

Retired major Sinha was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post on 31 July.

On 5 August, Sharmin Shahriya Ferdous, elder sister of Sinha, filed a case with Cox’s Bazar senior judicial magistrate court regarding the incident.

Senior judicial magistrate Tamanna Farah issued warrants for the arrest of all the accused after taking the case into cognisance on that day.

Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Teknaf police station Pradeep Kumar Das, main accused in the murder case, surrendered the following day and police later took him to Cox’s Bazar.

The home ministry formed a four-member committee, headed by Mizanur Rahman, additional divisional commissioner (development), on 2 August.

The authorities on 2 August suspended 21 police officials, including the in-charge of Baharchhara police outpost, in connection with the killing.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on 4 August assured the mother of Sinha of proper investigation into the murder of her son and the trial of his killers.
