The number of voters in the country has now increased to nearly 110 million following inclusion of some 7 million new voters, according to the election commission’s final updated electoral roll, reports UNB.

“The number of total voters now stands at 109,819,112 as 6,971,470 new voters were included in the electoral roll following the voter updating programme that started last year,” said chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Monday afternoon.

The CEC placed this statistics at a discussion arranged at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city marking the National Voters’ Day 2020.

Out of the total voters, 55,482,530 are men, 54,336,222 women and 360 transgender.

The EC, for the first time, disclosed the number of transgender voters collecting their data with their own identities during the updating exercise.

Besides, director general of the National Identity Registration Wing of EC Brig Gen Saidul Islam made a presentation over the voter updating programme.

In the presentation, he said 1,392,440 voters were removed from the voter lists on several grounds particularly death and dual enrolment reasons in 2019.

In April last year, the voter updating programme started across the country to enrol the Bangladeshi nationals born on and before 1 January, 2002 in the electoral roll.

Law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq addressed the function as the chief guest.

Later, the law minister and the CEC handed over smart national identity cards to some fresh voters enrolled during the last update campaign.

On 20 January last, the Election Commission published the draft updated electoral rolls.
