'Govt taking Tk 1b project to repair embankments'

The government is taking a Tk 1 billion project to repair embankments damaged during cyclone Amphan, state minister for water resources Zahid Faruk said Thursday.

He made the remarks while visiting Amphan-hit areas of Satkhira Sadar upazila, reports UNB.

The government is taking the army's help to complete the repair work within a short time, he said.

"We're working to ensure sustainable solution as natural calamity has become a regular phenomena due to climate change," Faruk said.

He said Bangladesh has become economically successful under the leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, adding that the government has taken initiatives to prevent future public sufferings.

Faruk also visited Pirojpur, another cyclone hit district on Wednesday.

Cyclone Amphan left a trail of devastation when it hit Bangladesh's coastal districts with wind speed of up to 180kph and over 10 feet tidal surges on 20 May.

It inflicted heavy damage to lives, livelihood, agriculture, infrastructures, environment, as well as the Sundarbans, in southwestern region of the country.

An initial estimate suggested that the damage caused by the cyclone runs into hundreds of millions of taka.
