A writ was filed with the High Court (HC) on Sunday seeking its directives to take necessary measures to ensure health safety of prisoners amid coronavirus pandemic, reports UNB.
Lawyer Shishir Monir filed the writ petition with the virtual bench of justice Obaidul Hasan.
Monir said they sought implementation of the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure health safety of jail inmates.
According to recent media reports, country's 68 prisons are holding a total of 85,000 prisoners against their capacity for 41,244 , Shishir said.
Maintaining social distancing is impossible in such situation, he added.
Secretaries to home ministry, law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry, inspector general of police and IG of prisons were made respondents to the writ.
Advocate Shishir sent them a legal notice in this regard earlier on 14 May and filed the writ after getting no response.
