Sixteen monkeys were poisoned to death in Char Muguria of Madaripur sadar municipality on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The tragic incident also went viral on facebook.

According to locals, they found the 16 dead monkeys in bushes of the ward No. 9 in the morning.

But they do not know who poisoned the monkeys.

Expressing his shock over the incident, deputy commissioner Md Wahidul Islam said they will take action after investigating the incident.

Madaripur district forest officer Taposh Kumar Sen Gupta said that a case has been filed with Sadar model police station in connection with this.

There is a long history of monkeys living in Char Muguria, much of which was forested.

Although their population is said to have peaked at around 10,000, currently estimates range between 1500-2500.
