62pc haor paddy harvested: Ministry

Farmers in haor areas of the country have already harvested 62 per cent of their paddy until 27 April, said the agriculture ministry.

Of the remaining 38 per cent, 14 per cent paddy is now ripe and ready for harvesting while 24 per cent is not fully ripe yet, said a ministry handout on Tuesday, reports UNB.

It also said agriculture affairs minister Abdur Razzaque will visit Dakhshin Sunamganj, Sadar and Tahirpur upazila in Sunamganj district on Wednesday to visit the harvesting there and thus encourage the farmers.

According to statistics provided by the Department of Agricultural Extension, Boro paddy was cultivated in 445,399 hectares of land in seven haor districts -- Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet and Brahmanbaria.

Of the districts, paddy has been harvested from 274,000 hectares of land as of 27 April, the handout added.
