Five arrested for spreading rumors about coronavirus

The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) arrested five youths from Rangpur and Gaibandha districts in overnight raids on Friday for spreading rumours about coronavirus on the social media, reports BSS.

Rangpur metropolitan police commissioner Md Abul Alim Mahmud disclosedthe information at a special press briefing arranged at his conference roomin the city on Saturday afternoon.

“The arrested youths are Ashik Sarder, 20, Akhteruzzaman, 24, AkibuzzamanAnkon, 20, Tanzilur Rahman Tamish, 23 and Samir Ghosh Dipto, 23,” Alim said.

He said the arrested youths posted false information on their facebook group titled “CORONAVAIRUS (covid-19) SAFE BANGLADESH,” moderated by Ashik Sarder, on ‘death’ of an expatriate Bangladeshi from coronavirus infection.

A special team of RpMP led by its additional deputy police commissioner(DB) Uttam Kumar Pathkor arrested the youths from different places of Rangpurcity and Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha.

During primary interrogation, the arrested youths admitted about theirinvolvement in spreading false information and a case was filed against themon Saturday night.

The DB police of RpMP produced them before a Rangpur court on Sunday from where they were sent to jail, assistant police commissioner (DB and media) of RpMP Altaf Hosain said.
