A man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight with them in Kaliakair, Gazipur early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Md. Hanif, 30, from Rampur in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.
Confirming the death, Kaliakoir police station sub-inspector Mufi Mahmud said Hanif was a terrorist and was accused in 10 lawsuits involving drugs, robbery and stealing.
According to the police, the victim used to live at his father-in-law’s residence in Habibpur area of Kaliakair, but kept on hiding.
Tipped off that Hanif along with other terrorists were staying near Jhikjhak field in Habibpur, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:00am, police said.
Sensing the presence of police, the terrorists opened fire on the team that prompted the law enforcement to retaliate, leaving Hanif bullet-hit.
When the others fled the scene, Hanif was rescued and taken to Kaliakair upazila health complex where the physicians declared him dead, police added.
The law enforcement claimed to have recovered a gun along with three cartridges from the scene.
Police also claimed that sub-inspector Mahbub Rahman, assistant sub-inspector Sultan Miah, constable Abdul Malek and constable Suman Miah of Kaliarkair police station sustained injuries during the gunfight.
