Locals and witnesses said the upazila administration organised a Victory Day event at Dewanganj Government High School. Secondary education officer Meher Ullah was the presenter of the event.
People from different strata along with the officials from the upazila administration were paying tributes by placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on the ground since the morning.
The presenter was calling people and various organisations by microphone to place the garlands.
Since Meher Ullah announced the name of the mayor in the fifth place, the mayor hurled abuse at the official and slapped him openly.
Speaking to Prothom Alo over phone, education officer Meher Ullah said the upazila administration assigned him for moderating the event and gave him a list of names, to be announced serially at the event for paying tributes. And, the mayor was the fifth in the list.
As he called the mayor’s name in the fifth place, the mayor at first hurled abuse at him and then slapped him in front of all others, Meher Ullah said adding, he filed a complaint to upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Kamrunnahar Shefa over the matter.
UNO Kamrunnahar Shefa told Prothom Alo, “That education officer was the presenter at the Victory Day event. I was on the altar of the Shaheed Minar at that time. The mayor assaulted him over the announcement on the serial of the names. A mayor cannot physically assault a government official in such way and this is not right by any means. The education official has filed a written complaint and the higher authorities have been informed about it.”
