The number of people tested to be positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Narayanganj crossed 3,000 as the district health department reported another 135 cases on Tuesday afternoon.

Besides, with three new deaths in the last 24 hours, the number of toll in the district has risen to 85, said district focal person for coronavirus affairs Zahidul Islam.

Also Narayanganj sadar upazila health and family planning officer, Zahidul Islam said the number of cases in the district stands at 3,047 as of Tuesday while 813 people recovered.

Of the three new deceased, two persons, aged 47 and 50 years, breathed their last at hospitals while another 70-year-old died at his home, he said.

Zahidul Islam said the number of cases is on the rise as more people are being infected by the highly infectious lung disease virus. The number of collection of swab samples has also increased, he added.

Narayanganj civil surgeon Mohammad Imtiaz blames easing lockdown, opening garments and other factories and not following health safety guidelines rigorously as reasons for the upsurge in the number of infected cases.

He further said Narayanganj would be again regarded as a red zone (for spreading coronavirus) if the health guidelines issued by the government are not followed properly. As a result, lockdown would be required again. This is why besides being conscious everyone has to follow the guidelines rigorously. Only then the number of cases would come down.

Bangladesh on Tuesday reported 37 new deaths and 2,911 cases, highest in a day. With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 52,445 and the number of people died in the novel virus infection stands at 709.
