Nominations of 52 candidates cancelled in Gazipur, Khulna city polls

Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the nomination papers of 52 candidates of Khulna and Gazipur City Corporation polls after scrutinizing their documents on Monday.

Of them, nomination of 23 candidates was cancelled in Gazipur while nomination of 29 was cancelled in Khulna.

In Gazipur, one was mayoral candidate, 19 ward councillors, and three reserve-seat female ward councillors were among the candidates whose nomination was cancelled, said EC's Returning Officer Rokib Uddin Mandal.

"After scrutinizing for two days, a total of 23 nominations were cancelled. The cancelled candidates can appeal against their cancellation to the divisional commissioners within three days", he said.

A total of 10 mayor candidates, 294 candidates for general councilor post and 87 for reserved-seat female councilor submitted their nomination papers, he added.

Meanwhile, in Khulna City Corporation, nominations of 19 general ward councilors and 10 reserve-seat female ward councilors were cancelled, said EC's returning officer Yunus Ali.

Earlier, the nomination papers of five mayoral candidates were accepted on Sunday, he said.

Five mayoral candidates, 189 ward councilors, 48 preserved female councilors submitted their nomination paper, he added.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23. The City Corporation polls are scheduled to be held on May 15.
