Man killed in Rajshahi ‘gunfight’

Prothom Alo English Desk | Update:

Prothom Alo IllustrationA man was killed in what Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) called a gunfight with alleged drug peddlers at Paschim Naboganga Kashiadanga in Rajshahi early Thursday.

The deceased is Abul Hasan alias Hasan Ghatial of Damkura area in Poba upazila, says UNB.

RAB-5 claimed that the man was a drug peddler.

Tipped off, a team of RAB-5 conducted a raid in the area around 12:30am, said lieutenant colonel Mahabub Alam, commanding officer of RAB-5.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on RAB members, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Hasan was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot. Hasan was wanted in 16 cases, said RAB.

Firearms, bullets, phensedyl and huge drugs were recovered from the spot.

The law enforcement’s version of the event was, however, not verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim’s family.
