An alleged drug trader was killed and another injured in what the law enforcement call a gunfight with police at Chowka in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj early Monday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Kaiyum, 28, son of Abdul Kuddus while the injured was Firoz, 38, son of late Kalimuddin, residents of Chowka village.

TM Mozahidul Islam, superintendent of Chapainawabganj police, said a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2:30am.

During their drive, a gang of drug traders opened fire on police from the house of Firoz, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gun battle.

After the gunfight, police rescued bullet-hit Kaiyum and Firoz from the spot.

Later, the injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Kaiyum dead.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the event as no witnesses of the event or no members of the victims’ family was available immediately.

With the latest one, at least 120 people were killed in 'gunfights' with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.
