Gazipur city polls in frames

Voting has begun in the Gazipur City Corporation polls on Tuesday. This is the first time that the contestants compete with their respective party symbols here.

BNP's Hasan Uddin Sarker and Awami League's Jahangir Alam are main mayoral candidates among the seven vying for the office.

The election was scheduled to be held on 15 May, but on 6 May the High Court stayed the election following a writ petition. Later, an apex court cleared the way for the polls and the election commission rescheduled it for 26 June.

Voting began at 8:00am and will end at 4:00pm. There are 57 ward councils in the city corporation and one candidate has been elected uncontested. A total of 254 candidates are contesting in the remaining 56 councils. For the reserved 19 seats of women councillors, 84 are competing.
