A faction of pro-Awami League teachers, supporters of former vice chancellor Shariff Enamul Kabir, on Tuesday blocked off two administrative buildings in Jahangirnagar University (JU) as part of a demonstration.

The protesting teachers hung banners of Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Pragatishil Shikkhok Samaj at the entrances of the two buildings. No administrative activities could be carried out.

The teachers protested against the vice-chancellor’s ‘violation of ordinance, statute and syndicate rules’ and demanded elections for the VC panel, and JUCSU. They also demanded fair appointment to the positions of the dean of law faculty and the provost committee chairman. The protest will  continue till the demands are met, they said.

The vice-chairman of the organisation Layek Sazzad Endellah said, “We submitted a memorandum to the VC seeking an immediate senate meeting with the inclusion of four topics in the agenda. The VC did not take any step although 15 days have passed. We tried to talk with him, but he has not sat with us for any discussion.”

Organising secretary of Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Pragatishil Shikkhok Samaj, Mohammad Alamgir Kabir, said, “Though there is an associate professor in the law faculty, a teacher from a different faculty has been appointed as the dean, which is a violation of the rules. Again, a person close to the VC has been made chairman of the provost committee. This cannot be tolerated.”

This pro-Awami League teacher organisation has been holding protests against the VC’s activities since 17 April.
