Incessant rains for the last two days have submerged many areas of Chattogram city and three upazilas of the district, causing immense sufferings to people, reports UNB.

The low-lying areas of the city, and Hathazari, Fatikchhari and Satkania upazilas went under water following torrential rains that started pouring down on Monday.

Agrabad, Halishahar, Baropool, Chhotopool, Chawkbazar, Bakolia, Chandgaon and CDA Residential Area in the city went under knee-deep water. Some low-lying areas went under waist-deep water.

People suffered a lot for lack of transport to reach their destinations.

Many were seen waiting in different places as they did not get any vehicle to reach their destinations amid rain. Some were seen wading through knee-deep water while some others took rickshaws to reach their destinations.

Ishtiaque Sadi, a college student, said he could not manage a vehicle even after waiting for an hour at GEC intersection to go to Agrabad while one Sohan Ahmed said, "After waiting for half an hour, I could manage a CNG-run auto-rickshaw for going to GEC intersection from Wireless intersection at an exorbitant fare."

The port city experienced 79.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 2:00pm on Tuesday, said Patenga met office duty officer Mohammad Rubel.

Kabir Hossain, a bus driver, said they had to struggle much to run their vehicles on dilapidated roads with potholes amid rain. "That's why many drivers preferred staying indoors, leading to a transport crisis."

Meanwhile, the country's highest 205 mm of rainfall was recorded in Sitakunda upazila of the district.

"There might be drizzling in the city in the next 24 hours but there's no chance of any heavy rainfall," Rubel said.
