Police and Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, have taken positions at several points in Mirpur of Dhaka, according to witnesses.

Hundreds of BCL and the ruling party's youth front Juba League activists took to the street at Mirpur-1 intersection around 11:00am on Sunday morning, the witnesses confirmed.

Members of police were seen dispersing agitating students trying to gather in the area, demanding safe road for the 8th consecutive days.

Several hundred law enforcers were present at Mirpur-10 intersection where students held demonstrations for last couple of days following deaths of two fellow students on 29 July.

Witnesses said water cannon and two armed vehicles were kept ready on the spot.

Police have set up several check posts between Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-2 and verifying driving licenses and documents of vehicles.

Sergeant of one of the check posts told Prothom Alo, “We fined 35 motorbikes as the riders failed to show necessary documents." A case was also filed against a bus owner, the policeman said.

Earlier, a group of youths and members of the law enforcement launched an attack on the demonstrating students demanding 'safe road' in the city's Mirpur-14 on Thursday afternoon.
