One of the attackers, who swooped on protesting students in Jhigatola of the capital on Saturday, has been identified as a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

Attacker Rubel Hossain, wearing a white panjabi during the attack, is the general secretary of BCL’s unit at the Northern University in Dhaka.

A photo published on the front page of Prothom Alo’s print edition on Sunday, shows Rubel, among others, running with a stick in one hand and a piece of a brick in other hand, attacking the protesting students, mainly teenagers.

“Teenagers attacked Awami League’s party office. They were even throwing stones. We chased them to save the office. I didn’t beat up anyone. I didn’t hurt anyone,” Rubel told Prothom Alo over phone.

Rubel also told Prothom Alo that he has been the general secretary of BCL unit at the Northern University since 2014.

Students of different schools and colleges have been staging demonstrations for the last eight days demanding justice for death of their two fellow students, who were killed in a road accident in the city on 29 July.
