Re-voting in two centres of Sylhet City Corporation election is underway from Saturday morning to determine the mayor of the city corporation.

The voting started at 8:00am and will continue uninterruptedly until 4:00pm, reports UNB.

The fate of two general councillors of wards 24 and 27 will also be decided through the fresh voting in the two centres.

Earlier, voting in the two centres—at Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School and Hobinandi Government Primary School—was postponed for irregularities on 30 July.

On 1 August, the election commission set the date for re-election.

There are 2,221 voters at Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School centre and 2,566 at Hobinandi Government Primary School one.

Country’s principal opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury has taken a lead of 4,626 votes in 132 centres out of 134. Ariful bagged 90,496 votes while ruling Awami League’s Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran got 85,870.

The BNP candidate now needs only 81 votes in the re-election to the postponed centres having a total of 4,787 voters.

Meanwhile, fresh voting in 14 more centres is being also held to elect the ward councillor from reserved seat-9 as two candidates bagged identical number of votes in the SCC polls.
