Arrestee among 2 killed in alleged gunfights

Two men, including an arrestee, were killed in reported gunfights in Magura and Chattogram districts early Saturday.

The deceased are Abul Bashar Biswas, 40, son of a certain Golam Sarwar Biswas of Nohata village in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura and Mohammad Nasir alias Mamun, 35, son of one Haju Kalamiah of Boali in Anwara upazila of Chattogram, reports UNB.

Police said Abul Bashar was killed in a gunfight between rival gangs of robbers while Mohammad Nasir was killed in a gunfight with the law enforcement.

In Magura, Abul Bashar was killed in an alleged gunfight between two gangs of robbers in Ramkantapur in Mohammadpur upazila, police said.

On information about the gunfight between robber gangs over sharing of money police went to the spot and recovered the body of Bashar, said Tariqul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Magura.

Deceased Abul Bashar Biswas was an accused in 10 robbery cases, he said.

Policemen also recovered bullet shells and sharp weapons from the spot, he added.A case was filed in this connection.

In Chattogram, Mohammad Nasir alias Mamun was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Dudhkumra of Anwara upazila.

Nasir was accused in 18 cases including murder and gang-rape, police said.

Dulal Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Anwara police station, said police arrested Mamun on Friday afternoon.

Later, a team of police conducted a drive in Dudhkumra area along with Mamun to recover arms.

When the team reached the area around 1:00am, a gang of terrorists opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcement to fire back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, the OC said.

Nasir received bullet injuries while trying to flee and died on the spot. Police recovered one LG, several rounds of bullet from the spot, he added.

Two policemen were also injured in the gunfight, Dulal Mahmud said.

The law enforcement’s versions of the events, however, could not be verified independently as no versions of the incidents were available immediately either from any witnesses or from the victims’ families.
