Cyber Unit to be strengthened to prevent cyber-crimes: IGP

The inspector general of police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwari on Monday said the Cyber Crime Monitoring Unit of the police headquarters will be strengthened for patrolling cyber-crimes, including the spread of rumours through social media, news agency UNB reports.

He came up with the remarks while briefing reporters at the police headquarters on the security measures taken for the Mourning Day to be observed on 15 August and ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on 22 August.

The unit will be strengthened comprising members from other units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Branch (SB) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), said the IGP.

Besides, he said, the district police have been directed to form cybercrime monitoring unit in each district.

He said several hundred online news portals which spread rumours during the student protests have been identified and a total of 21 cases filed in this connection. "No one will be spared," warned the IGP.

About security measure for the National Mourning day on 15 August and celebration of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, the police boss said they have taken extensive security measures for smooth observance of the National Mourning Day as well as a safe and uninterrupted celebration of the Eid.

He also said instructions have already given to remain alert and keep vigil to avert any untoward incident during the two programmes.

Asked about the current status of fugitive Bangabandhu killers, the IGP said they came to know that one of the killers is now staying in Canada and another is in the USA.

"The hideouts of others couldn't be confirmed as they've been changing their locations fast," he further said.
