Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda  on Monday said using electronic voting machine (EVMs) in the national election depends how acceptable it is to the stakeholders. It would also require training of the electoral officials and drawing up a relevant law.

The CEC also said EVMs can be used in some randomly selected constituencies if the government made relevant laws and if the a conducive environment was in place.

He was speaking at a training workshop in the capital’s electoral training institute (ETI) on Monday.

Terming the apprehension regarding use of EVMs as normal, CEC said, ‘It’s natural for the voters and politicians to be uneasy about EVMs as it is a new technology. We are yet to apprise them of its positive aspects. They will gradually learn about it.”

Pointing out the positive sides of EVMs, CEC said electoral expenditure would be slashed if this technology is used in polling.

He also insisted that a flawless election would be possible by using EVMs.
