Man killed in police 'gunfight'

A man was killed in what police called gunfight in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia early Monday, reports UNB.

Officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, Dara Khan, said that being tipped off that a gang of criminals gathered in the area, a team of police conducted a drive around 3:15am.

Sensing the presence of police, the criminals opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight that left top terror Altab Hossain, 38, son of Mosharaf Hossain, dead on the spot, he added.

However, his associates managed to flee the scene.

Police also recovered a foreign pistol, one round bullet and three machetes from the spot.

Besides, three policemen including sub-inspector Rajjak and assistant sub-inspector Arif were hurt in the gunfight, claimed the OC.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
