UGC to award 35 teachers

As many as 35 university teachers will be awarded the UGC Gold Medal by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh on Tuesday.

Of them, 18 teachers are being awarded for the year 2016 and 17 for 2017, says a UGC press release.

The academics, from several public and private universities are being recognised for their original research works, said the statement.

President Abdul Hamid is expected to hand over the awards.

Earlier, in August, the award had been renamed from UGC Award to UGC Gold Medal by the authorities.

Each of the awardees will receive Tk 50,000 for their book and Tk 30,000 for their article along with a certificate and medal.

The ceremony will be held at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.

UGC chairman professor Abdul Mannan will preside over the programme.

Professor Dil Afroza Begum, member of the commission, will deliver the address of welcome.

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, secretary of secondary and higher Education Division, of education ministry Md Sohorab Hossain will be present as special guests. Besides, National Professors, UGC members, its secretary, VC’s from public and private universities, noted educationists, will also be present.

The Commission introduced UGC Award in 1980 to encourage fundamental research works and publications of university teachers.
