Overseas jobs for Bangladeshis decline

Growth in overseas jobs secured by Bangladeshis has decreased by almost 30 per cent this year, according to a Xinhua report published by Borneo Bulletin.

It said over half a million Bangladeshis found overseas jobs during eight months of 2018.

This shows a decline of about 27 per cent over the same period last year.

This overseas employment situation contrasts the prediction made by overseas employment minister Nurul Islam earlier this year that 1.2 million overseas jobs would be secured by the country’s skilled and semi-skilled workforce in 2018.

The report said more than two-thirds of Bangladeshi workers found jobs in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Singapore.

Saudi Arabia alone recruited 172,379 workers to engage in infrastructure development and the service sector in January-August period, the agency reported quoting the BMET.

Malaysia reportedly emerged as the second largest destination for Bangladeshi workers in January-August period after the country received 125,819 workers, he said.
