A man was killed in what the police called gunfight in Baishari area of Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari upazila early Saturday.

The law enforcement claimed that deceased, Anwar Bali, was the second-in-command of robber group ‘Anwar Bahini’.

Acting on tip off, police conducted a raid in a brick field area of Baishari union of the upazila as they came to know that the robber group gathered there, said the officer-in-charge of Naikhongchhari police station.

The robber group opened fire on police when they took position prompting the law enforcers to retaliate and triggered a gunfight, the OC said.

Police found a dead body on the spot after the robber group retreated from there, the OC added.

The OC said police recovered two local firearms from the spot.

Local people identified the deceased as Anowar Bali, a top leader of Anwar Bahini, the OC added.

A press conference has been organised at the office of police superintendent of Bandarban for briefing newsmen about the gunfight.
The law enforcement’s version of the event, however, could not be verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witness or from the victim's family.
