National Unity Process to begin mass mobilisation 1 Oct

A coalition of opposition alliances and parties on Saturday unveiled programmes to engage people for creating a wave with the demand for free and fair elections in the country.

Noted jurist Kamal Hossain-led National Unity Process, at a rally attended by BNP and other parties, announced to hold nationwide rallies from 1 October.

The leaders including civil society representatives, who joined the rally, expressed solidarity with five demands and nine goals of the National Unity Process and the Jukta Front (United Process) led by former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, according to the proclamation.

The forum said committees would be formed across the country to bring forward the process of national unity for bringing changes in politics and governance culture in future.

"There is no democracy in the country today. The process of national unity has started in order to restore functional democracy," said the convenor of the Unity Process Kamal Hossain, who presided over the rally at Mahanagar Natya Mancha in the city in the afternoon.

Apart from Jukta Front convener AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, BNP secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed and Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, former caretaker govenment adviser Mainul Hosein and Ganoshayastha Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury attended the rally.

Its proclamation was read out by convener of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah.

The opposition alliance, which is yet to take a clear shape, demands restoration of democracy, reconstitution of the election commission, deployment of the army during the elections, and formation of a poll-time government for free and fair election.
