Salahuddin verdict in Shillong on 28 September

A Shillong court, in India, on 28 September will deliver its verdict on BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, charged with illegally entering the Indian territory.

Shillong police filed the case against Salahuddin on 11 May in 2015.

The court proceedings continued for over three years, ending on 13 August. Should the court indicts the BNP leader, he may be handed a maximum of five years in jail.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Salahuddin said he is hopeful of getting justice. "Our countrymen know the truth. The court has been told everything," he said.

The announcement of the verdict has been deferred four times, something his lawyer AP Mahante termed as 'unprecedented'.

Salahuddin told the court that he was abducted from his home in March 2015. Two months later, he found himself in Shillong.

A former APS of the then prime minister Khaleda Zia, Salahuddin was voted a member of parliament in 2001. He later became a state minister as well.

He was a joint secretary general of BNP when he was 'abducted'. He has been made a member of the BNP's standing committee. the party's highest policymaking forum.
