The chairman of Bishwambharpur upazila parishad in Sunamganj district allegedly raped a mother of four children inside his office on Wednesday promising to provide her a sewing machine.

The alleged perpetrator is Harun-or-Rashid, chairman of the upazila and former president of Biswambharpur upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), reports news agency UNB.

On information, a team of police, led by sub-inspector Arif of Biswambhar police station rescued the woman from the spot and took her to the station.

The victim filed a case against the chairman accusing him of rape. Locals demonstrated against the incident.

According to the case statement, Harun called the woman to his office over phone and seduced her.

Later, locals informed Biswambharpur police station and staged a demonstration seeking immediate arrest of the chairman.

Police said they were trying to arrest the accused.
